Democrat declared winner in Connecticut governor's race

Democrat Dan Malloy has won the tight Connecticut governor's race over Republican Tom Foley, Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz announced by statement Friday.

The victory for Malloy, the former mayor of Stamford, is the first for a Democrat in the state since 1986. He will replace M. Jodi Rell, who retired from office.

Figures Friday evening showed Malloy, 55,  received 566,498 votes and Foley got 560,861 votes.

The difference of 5,637 votes exceeds the 2,000-vote margin necessary to trigger an automatic statewide recount, Bysiewicz said, and there will be no statewide recount.

Foley, a businessman and former U.S. Ambassador to Ireland, told the Hartford Courant he is not ready to concede unless he is sure the numbers are accurate. He has not decided on a challenge.

"As Secretary of the State, it is my job to make sure that everyone's voice is heard and that every vote is counted," Bysiewicz said. "The closeness of this election highlights the importance of every person's vote
