Kasparek Scores Winner in Centenary Win

THIBODAUX, La. - Goals by Stefani Robbs and Heather Kasparek led the Centenary womens soccer team (2-0-0) to a 2-1 win over Nicholls State University (1-2-0) at Nicholls Soccer Field Wednesday. Playing in extremely soggy field conditions, with standing water in spots, the Ladies overcame an early goal by Nicholls State to capture their second win of the season. "It was a good result with the win," Centenary head coach Chase Wooten said. "The bad thing was we didnt get to work on a few things as a team (due to the poor field conditions)." With the score knotted at 1-1 in the 53rd minute, Kasparek, a senior from Broken Arrow, Okla., scored the deciding goal on a reset by senior Lauren Mills (Austin, Texas/James Bowie). Mills served a flighted ball into the Colonel penalty area. As Nicholls State was unable to clear, Kasparek struck the loose ball for her first goal of the season, sliding in between a number of players for the tally. The Colonels opened scoring in the 11th minute, taking a 1-0 lead on a goal by Katherine Peters. Just two minutes following Peters opening goal, Mills attacked the Nicholls State net, driving down the endline and serving a low cross to Robbs inside the Colonels penalty box. Robbs, a freshman forward from Dallas, created enough space between herself and the retrieving Nicholls State defenders to poke the ball past goalkeeper Sarah Neunzig. The goal was Robbs third of the season. Following Robbs tally, the Ladies missed a golden opportunity to take a 2-1 lead in the 21st minute when freshman Brittany ONeal (Nacogdoches, Texas/Nacogdoches) broke away from the Nicholls State defense and beat Neunzig on the dribble. Starring at an open net, ONeal unluckily hit the post, resulting in the game remaining tied until Kaspareks 53rd minute goal. Junior goalkeeper Ali Hilsher (Tulsa, Okla./Washington) made seven saves for her second win of the season. Neunzig made six saves in the loss for the Colonels. Shots were even in the contest, 15-15. Despite the win, Wooten says his team must continue to improve throughout the season. "We want to be in position to play good soccer for the rest of the season," Wooten said. "One nice thing is were having a lot of people step up." Centenary continues its roadtrip this weekend, playing away games at Texas State Friday and Stephen F. Austin Sunday.
