Updated: January 7, 2009
The Shreveport Sports nine-game winning streak came to an end Saturday night at Fair Grounds Field, losing to Pensacola 4-1. The nine-game winning streak had matched the longest in the franchise as the Sports had also won nine straight back in 2003. Pensacola got excellent pitching from lefthander Blake Allen in holding the Sports to seven hits. Allen, pitched eight and one third innings to pick up his first win of the season. Tony Pierce came in and struck out the final two batters recording his 20th save of the year. Pensacolas George Branch had two solo home runs, one in the fourth and one in the seventh innings bringing him to ten on the season. Shreveports only run came in the third when Melvin Falu led off with a double and later scored on a double play. Falu was only one of two Sports base runners to reach third base. The Sports stayed in the game by turning four double plays, matching their season high. Shreveport will now open a short two-game series Sunday at Fair Grounds Field against Coastal Bend. Game time 6:05 pm.
