Residents Concerned Over Calumet Plant

After years of dealing with air pollution and the threat of explosions, residents living near the Calumet Lubricants plant say it`s time to clear the air. Now they`re calling on state representatives for help. Monday afternoon a group calling themselves the Residents for Air Neutralization, or R.A.N., called a meeting to voice their concerns.
"Maybe we can get them to minimize some of the chemicals that we are exposed to over there," said R.A.N. President Velma White.
The meeting was held at the Department of Environmental Quality Office. State representatives joined them via video conference. R.A.N. is worried by Calumet`s recent request to double their production. Many fear it will only add to the pollution and increase the chance for explosions. Late last month, the Department of Environmental Quality approved Calumet`s request to increase it`s production. Residents fear Monday`s meeting could have been the last chance to voice their concerns.
