TS: Haughton Residents Fight to Get Dangerous RR Crossing Fixed

Updated: February 5, 2007
Dangerous railroad crossings are no laughing matter. Residents in one Ark-La-Tex town say they have been fighting to get their local crossing repaired. Yet, their efforts seem to be going nowhere. That`s when they contacted our Troubleshooters for help. Haughton residents say the crossing at North Myrtle St. is notorious because it is in such disrepair. Residents and city officials have asked KCS Railroad to replace it, yet, nothing has been done. "It`s awful, it`s just like running over potholes," Mary Tidwell, a Haughton resident, said. Take just one look at this railroad crossing and it`s not hard to see that the wood is getting worn out. It`s not just the bumpy ride that worries drivers. The condition of the tracks damages vehicles and could case a major accident. Haughton Councilwoman Martha McGee says the town has been negotiating with KCS Railroad officials for more than a year. "They were supposed to get a contract out to town hall so they can start repairs this summer, but we still don`t have a contract," McGee said. The repairs are scheduled for this summer and experts say they shouldn`t take more than a week. Yet, after getting nowhere, the residents of Haughton aren`t holding their breath. "We`re very frustrated," McGee said, " don`t you hate for someone to tell you they are going to do something, then they dont?" Our Troubleshooters have contacted KCS Railroad officials and they`re waiting on a response. If you`re facing a similar problem, there is an agency that can help. "It`s called the Railroad Consumer Assistance Program. You can reach their office by calling 1-866-254-1792 or email at railconsumer@stb.gov . If you have a problem with a business, government agency or an individual, let Troubleshooters help you. Call our hotline at (318) 629-7113 or email us at troubleshooters@ktalnews.tv. The office is open Mon., Weds., Fri., from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm and Tues., Thurs., 5:00 pm -7 pm.
