We continue our coverage of the U.S. military with an invention that's made it to the civilian world. It's the fitness craze hitting Texarkana. "We're the only people around in this area that has anything like this what so ever" says Monte Douglas, a clinical exercise specialist at CHRISTUS St. Michael Health & Fitness Center. The TRX Suspension Training System was developed about four years ago by the Navy Seals for U.S. Marines. The workout was picked up by Olympic and professional athletes and is now being used at CHRISTUS St. Michael Health & Fitness Center. "No matter what exercise you do with this strap, you're using every single muscle in your body every single exercise" says Douglas. "I'm sore just about every time, so I feel like I’m getting more out of it” says Robin Baker. She is trying to get back into shape after having her third baby about six months ago. Coming in five days a week, Baker’s lost the baby weight and built muscle. “I feel great. I have a lot more energy” she says. The idea is simple: use a strap and your body weight for resistance. Instructors say twenty minutes of TRX equals about an hour of lifting weights and it works in cardio too! “They're running further. They're getting stronger. They're getting more flexible. They're reducing their risk for injury” says Douglas. “It's just great. It's the best thing I’ve ever come across in the gym. It's fantastic” says Michael Wharton-Palner who lost weight and built muscle using TRX. CHRISTUS St. Michael just started offering group classes. All fitness levels from professional to beginners can workout in the same class. TRX is also used for rehabilitation. Participants see weight loss, increased lean muscle mass, flexibility and balance.
