One High Electric Bill

Updated: January 7, 2009
Imagine receiving a 1200 dollar electric bill for one month, when your normal bill runs around 200 dollars. One Arkansas family is paying for some high dollar electricity and they feel they shouldn`t have to. "My husband called me at work and said our electric bill came in and it is 1200 dollars and I laughed and said it is a typo." Amy Cannady is talking about her August bill from Southwest Arkansas Electric Co-Op. " There is no possible way we could have used 12000 kilowatts in one month." When her husband contacted REA, bringing attention to the "mistake", they asked him to go read his meter which showed his September bill wasn`t much better. It showed 10,200 kilowatts as the usage, that bill totaled 900 dollars. "We had a certified electrician come and check our home from point A to point B and there is no way that we could have used that much electricity," said Cannady. After REA performed a meter check, the Cannady`s requested it be read by an outside party. The results came back unchanged. Yet the meter, which REA reported as working properly, was replaced in late September. While dealing with REA, Amy also contacted the Arkansas P.S.C. Officials there also looked at the meter readings and couldn`t find anything wrong, they gave her an option to file a complaint. Since September, the Cannady`s have paid a 600 dollar down payment and 300 dollars over their current bill each month but not anymore. A meeting between the couple and REA with some help from KTAL could now ease some financial burden. The cannady`s must still pay their outrageous bill but payments are 55-dollars a month for 24 months.
