Updated: January 7, 2009
The Louisiana Department of Social Services, along with the departments of Revenue and Labor, have announced the opening of more than 100 free Volunteer Income Tax Assistance sites across the state. The sites, operating through April 16th, will provide free tax service to any person who earns less than $38,348 a year. People who qualify can get a refund even if no taxes were taken out of their pay during the year, residents can also file for back refunds for previous years. Receipt of the refund does not affect eligibility for benefits such as cash assitance, Medicaid, food stamps, Supplementary Social Security Income, or subsidized housing.
