The new year means big security changes at the Caddo Parish Courthouse. Starting Tuesday, The Caddo Sheriffs Office will be in charge of security and the average person will probably notice.
For years, security at the courthouse was handled by a private company. Security guards who once monitored these entrances have been replaced by seasoned sheriff deputies with years of law enforcement experience. Each screener is armed with either a pistol, tazer gun or pepper spray.
Yet, despite the tight security, there is one change that will make access easier. The Milam street entrance has been re-opened. However, those going in and out of the courthouse will not be allowed to bring mace, cameras or knives into the building at all. Most people we met Tuesday say the tight security is a good thing. "It increases the safety of the people who are coming into the courthouse and leaving so I`m happy the sheriff is taking over," Shelet Dennis, a Shreveport resident, said.
