Church, Convention Center Damaged

By: H. York
Updated: October 29, 2009
The steeple above First United Methodist Church came crashing down as a strong storm system moved through downtown Shreveport Thursday evening. The steeple landed on a car traveling along Common Street.

57-year-old, Michael Williams of Shreveport was inside the car.  He was taken to LSU Health Sciences Center where he is listed in serious but stable condition. The man gave a KTAL camera crew on the scene the "thumbs up" sign as he was loaded into an ambulance.  His injuries are not considered life-threatening.

LADOTD personnel removed the steeple from the roadway to a parking lot belonging to the church.

The same storm damaged the Shreveport Convention Center; shattering 15 windows.

Several downtown roads are closed and power lines are down throughout the area. Shreveport police warn that many of those power lines are live. Police are asking people to avoid the area around Common Street.

Much of the downtown area is without power, including Sam's Town, El Dorado, and The Hilton.
