A family is devastated after losing a father, brother, uncle and son. "I should've gone over there" says Mary Hopton through tears. She says her son, John Lucas, was troubled, has not been able to find a job and was drinking Thursday after a fight with relatives earlier in the day.

It escalated later in the afternoon. Family members say Greg Jones called 911 to report trouble at his uncle's house.  Jones reportedly told 911 operators someone was firing shots at him according to Caddo Parish Sheriff Steve Prator.

Here's what happened when deputies arrived according to the sheriff: Deputy Greg Ardoin arrived at the home in the 3700 block of Jeri Lane, he knocked on the front door but no one answered.  He went around to the back of the house, saw Lucas holding a gun, asked him to put it down but he did not.  Deputy Ardoin shot him twice, killing him.

The deputy is on paid administrative leave while an investigation continues. Sheriff Prator says so far, he does not see anything wrong with the deputy's actions.
