Lone Star Army Ammunition Plant received its deactivation orders on September 30th.  The plant has been in operation for nearly 70 years.  Workers at the Hooks, TX plant churned out millions of grenades and other explosives for many wars like Vietnam and Iraq.  In fact, every grenade used during Operation Iraqi Freedom was made at Lone Star.

The plant sits on thousands of acres in Bowie County.  Local leaders are working with the Defense Department to bring commercial development to the land.  County judge James Carlow hopes development will provide a new source of hope to youngsters for jobs much like Lone Star did when it was built in 1942.
