District B Council Race May Not Be Over Yet

Updated: January 7, 2009
Tuesday night there were two celebrations. But only one of the candidates can be the winner of Shreveport City Council`s District B seat. With all 20 precincts reporting, Sheva Sims won the race in Caddo Parish garnering 2,861 votes. Incumbent Monty Walford received 2,849. But those results don`t include one District B precinct which is actually located in Bossier Parish. There Walford earned 38 votes, Sims got 20. Add all the results together and Walford is the winner by just 6 votes. The results are still unofficial, but with the numbers so close Sims is now asking for a recount. "The recounts are handled very quickly," said Caddo Clerk Of Court Gary Loftin. Most of the voters cast their ballots using computerized voting systems. Loftin says in the event of a recount, only the paper absentee ballots would be subject to scrutiny. "We pull out the ballots and count them right in front of them [the candidates] and then they know the results in a very short period of time," said Loftin. The recount will be held Thursday at 4:30 pm in the Registrar of Voters Office. Stay with KTAL News for continuing coverage of this developing story.
