Oil and gas companies are working with local experts to protect the environment. Now, instead of taking water from underground aquifers, they're using surface water.

Since that water comes from the Red River, the companies are learning how to protect endangered wildlife living in and around the Red.

"In our area we have three endangered species; a plant, a fish and a bird. The earth fruit is a plant, the pallid sturgeon is a fish, and we have the least tern,” explained Gary Hanson, Director of the Red River Watershed Management Institute at LSU-Shreveport.

Shale experts from around the world will take part in the Gulf Coast Association of Geological Societies Convention this weekend at the Shreveport Convention Center. Experts will talk about issues involving the Haynesville Shale, including water usage and the environment. To find out more about the convention and how you can attend, log onto www.gcags2009.com.
