CenturyTel, EMBARQ complete merger

Century Tel, Inc. and EMBARQ Corporation today announced they have merged into one company, called CenturyLink.
The new Monroe-based communications company operates about 2.1 million broadband connections and 7.5 million access lines in 33 states.
"CenturyLink will be recognized as one of the country's leading telecommunications companies – based right here in Monroe, Louisiana," said Governor Bobby Jindal, today in a media release.
The company expects to be listed in the Fortune 500 list of the country's largest corporations. It would be the third Louisiana-based company to make the list.
According to CenturyLink, customer operations will continue under both the CenturyTel and EMBARQ names until sometime later this year.
