Illegal Fireworks Still For Sale

By: Mario Boone
Updated: June 29, 2009

Texarkana on both sides of the border ban the use of fireworks.  However, fireworks are still being sold here.  Sound confusing?  Well police and fire officials say they can understand why.  At least 6 fireworks stands are allowed to sell fireworks thanks to a grandfather clause in the city ordinance.

The clause allows pre-existing fireworks stands to remain as long as no changes are made in ownership.  That means residents can purchase the devices, but are not allowed to use them in the city limits.

A person caught using fireworks can be cited and fined $130.  Police say they will investigate reports of fireworks use if called.  Police and fire urge the public to be smart and safe when it comes to fireworks.
