Local Jockey Remembered

By: Maria Vallejo
Updated: August 17, 2007
Police say Burch was thrown from the vehicle she was in and died instantly. The next morning when Lucy didn't show up at the race track her friend Monica Stanley started asking about her. "I hadn't heard anything, then she told me she'd been killed in a car accident. Jockeys who knew Lucy say they are still in shock and they can't believe that she's gone." "It just totally stunned me it didn't seem real to me for a while you know." "It's not like she is at another track going to be back it's pretty rough on a lot of people around here." "It's just weird not to see her one day she's here one day she's gone." Monica Stanley who was closest to Lucy even wished authorities might have been wrong."I just kept hoping they'd made a mistake or hoping they'd made a mistake. She'd be walking in." There is a memorial scheduled for Sunday at noon at Louisiana Down's winner circle, it's in memory of Mary Francis Lucille Burch. Or Lucy as her friends called her.
