Senator Vitter's prediction on pay raises comes true

By: Import User
Updated: April 28, 2009

As I predicted, the bill we worked so hard to pass  through the Senate to end automatic Congressional pay raises remains sitting in  the House of Representative with no action.

So, this week I offered an amendment to the Senate budget  resolution to reflect in the budget that the autopilot raises would end. It  would save more than $22 million in the budget, which may seem small to Washington politicians  when considered in the massive budget of more than $3 trillion.  But, it  reflects the priority that this substantial sum of taxpayer money should not be  supporting automatic raises for members of Congress.  Unfortunately, my  amendment was blocked from consideration.

Most Americans do not enjoy automatic pay raises, and  members of Congress shouldn’t either.  I will keep up the fight to end  these unjust raises.

Sincerely,

Senator David Vitter
United States Senator
