Miller County Quoum Court Wants Texarkana, Arkansas To Pay Up

When moneys up for grabs, everybody wants a piece of the action. In Miller County, a financial windfall worth a million has surfaced, and the Miller County Quorum Court thinks the county should get some of it to keep the doors of its juvenile detention center open. The Quorum Court voted last month to fund the Lantz Lurry Detention Center for six months, but money is running out and the JPs feel the city isnt holding up its end of the deal. The countys JPs say the City of Texarkana needs to pay its share of operating costs for the facility. They dont understand why the city is asking for public opinion as to how more than a million dollars of new revenue should be spent when the city owes the county $400,000. "You know we have a written agreement, that they signed in good faith. Theyve not lived up to their agreement and I think it behooves both the county and the city to have a juvenile detention center. We should be concerned about our youth in Miller County," says John Haltom, Miller County Quorum Court Member. The county judge has contacted an attorney about handling a lawsuit against the city. In the coming months a workshop will be held with the Quorum Court on what actions the county can take. City officials believe they arent responsible for paying for Lantz Lurry.
