Caddo Sheriff Awards Crime Victims Funds

Updated: January 7, 2009
Caddo Parish Sheriff Steve Prator awarded nearly $74,000 over the summer to crime victims who applied for money from the state Crime Victims Reparations Fund. In June, the Sheriff presented checks totaling $39,291 to victims or their families. In July, he presented $9,022, and in August, $25,596. Among the cases reviewed was that of two people who died from injuries received after an offender set their house on fire. A child was also injured in the fire. Thirty cases in all were approved to receive awards for expenses including lost support and wages, medical bills, and funeral expenses. The Crime Victims Reparations Fund, which is managed locally by the sheriff, compensates victims of crimes where force or the threat of force was used. Money distributed to the victims is obtained from court costs paid by defendants, supplemented by court-ordered restitution from criminals, a federal grant, donations and interest.
