Police Hope To Stop Vandalism Downtown

The department has asked the city council to approve an ordinance aimed at curbing undesirable activity downtown. Police say they know what`s causing the problem-some restaurants around the courthouse are turning into night clubs on weekends.
Officers tell us these types of businesses attract a younger crowd, who they say are the ones responsible for the vandalism and loitering.
Under the new ordinance, restaurants would no longer be allowed to charge cover fees. Police say that would help alleviate the problem. But city councilman Theron Jackson is not sold on the idea of telling restaurants around the courthouse how they should run their businesses.
The council is scheduled to act on the ordinance in two weeks.
