SHREVEPORT,
La. - The no. 2 LSU Shreveport Pilots picked up a 7-5 win over the
Jarvis Christian Bulldogs on Friday afternoon to take the series
two games to one.
Caleb
Olson (5-1) pitched a great game tossing seven strong innings
scattering eight hits while allowing three earned runs and struck out
six
in a walk-free performance. Jonathan Burnett was the bridge to the ninth
as faced only two batters in the eighth inning as the Pilots inserted
second baseman show why he was put in as a defensive replacement. Kym
Barthel made back-to-back web gem plays. The
first he made a diving stab at a liner and double the runner off first
and then made another diving play to retire the side as the Pilots
nursed a three-run lead at the time.
Jacob
Byrd made it interesting in the ninth inning on his way to recording
his third save of the year as he allowed two hits, one run, two walks
and struck out two including the final batter of the game with the bases
loaded.
Jarvis
(22-13, 9-6 RRAC) scored the first run of the contest on a rbi-single
by Javion Randle in the top of the first inning but the Pilots
rallied back to score a pair in the bottom half of the inning as Kyle
Pearson drove in a run on a fielder's choice and the second run came as a
result of David Dorton reaching with the bases loaded on catcher's
interference to give the Pilots a 2-1 lead.
The
Bulldogs struck with back-to-back rbi-triples to regain the lead 3-2 in
the top of the third but LSUS rallied back again with three in the
bottom of the fourth to take the lead for good as William Breland
brought in a pair with a double down the right field line and he went to
second on an error by the Jarvis right fielder. Breland scored a couple
of pitches later as the Bulldog catcher over threw
the pitcher on a throw back to the mound.
David
Dorton had a good day at the dish for the Pilots as he drove in a run
each with singles in the fifth and sixth innings to finish as one
of only two Pilots with multi hits going 2-for-4 with two rbis while
Breland was 2-for-4 with two runs batted in.
LSUS (22-11, 9-6 RRAC) moves into a tied for 3rd
place in the conference with Jarvis record wise but the Pilots
hold the tie-breaker over the Bulldogs since winning the series two out
of three. The Pilots took advantage of five Jarvis errors today.
The
Pilots will now hit the road for eight straight games before returning
to Pilot Field to face William Carey in a double header on Tuesday,
April 9, 2013, at 4 p.m. The next game is Tuesday in Pineville as the
Pilots take on Louisiana College at 6 p.m.
