BATON ROUGE, La. -- No.3 LSU (19-2) defeated Northwestern State (9-14) in a 13-inning pitching duel by a score of 2-1 Wednesday night at Alex Box Stadium.
Shortstop Alex Bregman delivered a walk-off single to right field, sending second baseman JaCoby Jones to the plate for the game's winning run in the bottom of the 13th.
The victory marked LSU's 20th straight over a Louisiana school. The Tigers' last loss to an in-state school came on April 12, 2011 to Northwestern State in Baton Rouge.
"This was a very well-played ball game, and it was a hard-earned victory for us," said LSU coach Paul Mainieri. "Northwestern State played and coached an outstanding game, and I thought our players responded well to their intensity. Both teams made great plays and big pitches throughout the night, and I'm glad we were able to finally earn the win."
Bregman finished 3-for-6 on the night, extending his hit streak to nine straight games.
Right-hander Will LaMarche (1-0) struck out four in 2.2 innings of work and earned the victory, as LSU improved its record in extra-inning games over the past two seasons to 8-3. The Tigers are 7-0 this season in games decided by two runs or less.
Northwestern State right-hander Cameron Brewer suffered the loss, giving up the Tigers' walk-off single in the 13th inning.
LSU grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the first inning with an RBI single to left field from left fielder Raph Rhymes.
LSU starting pitcher Russell Reynolds provided five innings of shutout work, giving up three hits while striking out two.
The Demons rallied to tie the game at 1-1 in the eighth inning with an RBI single from first baseman Todd Wallace.
Starting pitcher Cody Butler led Northwestern State through the first nine innings, allowing one run on six hits while striking out five.
