The Department of Social Services Office in Desoto Parish is now closed, forcing people to travel to the Shreveport office. Doors were closed Thursday of last week.

Residents used the office to get assistance with their food stamps, welfare and child services.

The office was closed, because the building is up for sale as part of a bankruptcy case.

For years Marsha McCall worked used to work at the office, and she even started a petition to try to save the office.

"When child protection cases come up, children are removed in the middle of the night, children have no place to take them," says McCall. "Where [are] you going to take them? The sheriff's office? Not a good place for children."

Even though the petition got more than 3,000 signatures, the state still decided to relocate services.
