Catholics worldwide have a new leader. 76-year-old Pope Francis has taken the helm of the Catholic Church. This announcement marks the election of the first pope from the western hemisphere.
Bishop Michael
Duca was on his way to south Louisiana and he immediately turned around when he
heard the announcement was about to be made.
He wanted to hear the news with his staff members.
A group
gathered at the Catholic Center watched as Pope Francis made his first
appearance. Many eagerly watched not
knowing who the next pope would be.
There was also excitement over the possibility of a pope from the United States, but all in the room were happy with the final decision. They all agreed it was great to be able to share a part of history.
