Two-run first inning leads Tulane past Demons

NEW ORLEANS - Two runs scored on a Andrew Garner single was enough for Tulane to defeat the Northwestern State baseball team 3-0 Friday night in non-conference action.

The final game of the two-game set will be played at 2 o'clock on Wednesday

Green Wave's (7-6) Brandon Boudreaux hit a two-out single up the middle and advanced to second on a walk to Sean Potkay. Both runners advanced a base on a passed ball and scored after the Garner single.

NSU (6-7) started Andrew Adams (0-1) who took the loss on five innings pitched and allowed only five hits and two runs.

"Quality start from Andrew Adams.  He gave us a chance to win," said first-year head coach Lane Burroughs. "He gave up two runs in the first and settled in, and then (Logan) Shaftner came and he gave us a chance to win."

Shaftner piched for three innings and gave up one run on five hits.

"You go on the road and hold a team to three runs, you should win the game in college baseball," said Burroughs. "We've been shutout two games in-a-row.  We have to find a way to score runs."

Tulane started David Napoli, but pulled him at the start of the second inning for Daniel Rankin (1-0) who grabbed the win on four innings with four hits and four stikeouts.

Emerson Gibbs worked 2.1 innings and Ian Gibaut (1) gets to save on 1.2 innings pitched.

Tulane added an insurance run in the sixth inning on a Bowen Woodson single that scored Garner who reached on a fielder's choice.

Edwin Gomez and Zack Costa each had two hits in the game and Cort Brinson, Nick Purdy, Will Watson, and Matt Baca each contributed a hit.

Boudreaux led the Green Wave with a three-for-four day and Potkay finished two-for-three.

NSU returns home to open a three-game weekend series with Louisiana-Monroe on Friday at 6:30 before going to Monroe to play Saturday and Sunday's games.
