While many were staying warm in bed, a large group of people decided to get freezin' for a reason.

Early Saturday morning, the 2013 Polar Plunge was held at the American Legion, Lowe-McFarlane Post #14.

Hundreds came to support the Special Olympics by enjoying food, music, and of course a plunge into the freezing waters of Cross Lake.

Special Olympics President, Pat Carpenter Bourgeois, says the event inspires everyone who attends.

"We are really giving our athletes a lot of self confidence and coverage to get out there and do other things, things they never thought they could do."

More than 50 people jumped in the frigid waters here in the Shreveport/Bossier plunge.

Two other polar plunges were held Saturday morning, one in Baton Rouge, and the other in Lake Charles.
