On the job for one year, Dr. Jim Purcell is trying to move higher education forward in the state of Louisiana.
Purcell is the Higher Education Commissioner. He took some time Tuesday morning to speak with local leaders about the current status of colleges, universities and all post-secondary institutions. His first priority was explaining how investing in more education will impact our economy in a positive way.
"What we've been caught up in really is a low wage, low-skill equilibrium which is opposite end of that. You end up with little to no human capital accumulation because you really didn't need high-skill labor so you end up with slow growth," said Purcell.
Doctor Purcell presented his talk at the Shreveport Chamber of Commerce. He is also working on a performance-based funding formula for post-secondary education.
