Business magazine 'Forbes' has rated Shreveport/Bossier as the tenth best housing market in terms of housing recovery. The ratings took into account median home price, affordability and projected job growth. In the past 12 months median home prices have risen almost 3-percent and 1500 jobs are expected to be added to the local economy in 2013.
Dixey Robertson, Executive Officer with the Home Builders Association of Northwest Louisiana says she is not surprised by the high ranking. "We've had that nice slow, steady growth that you really want, we didn't have a big boom five years ago, didn't have an overbuilt market."
A strengthening housing market hasn't triggered a flurry of new home growth. "Our only concern we have on the horizon right now is lot counts, development of raw land, we're really hoping there's going to be some new neighborhoods started soon," says Robertson. The fastest growing areas are in north Bossier City and southeast Shreveport.
Katrina Patrick with Diamond Realty & Associates in Bossier City says many recent home buyers have been families looking to upgrade from starter homes. "You also see investors from all over the country coming in, wanting to invest in our area," says Patrick.
