Possible water bill increase for Shreveport...

Since the mid-90's the city has been in violation with the EPA when it comes to overflow and sanitation systems.
In a closed door session Shreveport City council and the city's administration sat down with the Department of Justice (who respresents the EPA) to discuss what needs to be done.

The EPA has filed suit against the city for a number of violation. The city is looking for a compromise and an agreement to bring Shreveport's Sanitary Sewer Overflow Systems to federal standards.

They need to know exactly what those repairs are, and how much it will cost.

In 2011 over $70 million was dedicated to the city in bond money to be used for the repairs, but ti's going to cost possibly $200 million.

"I'm not for increasing rates and I don't think anyone on council is. We're looking for a smart approach that is affordable and it could take some time," councilman Sam Jenkins said.

Jenkins also says it's important to remember what an increase will do for taxpayers on fixed or low income.
