Could your dog get bitten by the flu bug

Just like humans, your dog could be at risk of getting the flu.
Canine influenza is a highly contagious respiratory disease in dogs.
Veterinarians say your dog may have the flu if they have a cough, runny nose and fever. The vet can also determine if your dog has the flu by testing respiratory secretions and taking blood samples.
The virus is mainly spread through direct contact, through the air by coughing or sneezing and through contaminated surfaces like a person's hands or clothing.
Dogs that have spent time in shelters, kennels and pet stores are most at risk for the canine flu.
There is a flu vaccine that is available at some local veterinarian offices. The initial vaccination requires two doses, 2-4 weeks apart, followed by annual revaccination.
So far there is no evidence of transmission of canine influenza virus from dogs to people.
