It's a tradition for many people across ArkLaTex. Holiday giving is a way to celebrate the season. However, before you make a donation, you may want to check in with the local Better Business Bureau to learn more about area organizations.
One local non-profit is a shining example of an agency on the BBB's good list.
"A blessing to see people who have been struggling, who are hungry, who are homeless, addicted... to see them come in and get their lives together," said Rev. Henry Martin, Rescue Mission Executive Director.
That's the mission of the Shreveport-Bossier Rescue Mission. Since 1955, it has been a safe place to learn a better path through life.
"I came to get on the program to get off drugs," said Lorinda Rhodes, resident at rescue mission.
Rhodes has come a long way since she arrived last August.
She does her part by working in the laundry and serving food to more than 250 residents.
"It helps a lot. It gives us something to do besides sit around all day," said Rhodes.
Reverend Henry Martin is the man in charge.
"All based on Jesus Christ and what he's done for us. That's what we do. We spread the message of gospel through services we offer," said Martin.
The local B.B.B. believes in what they're doing, too, and says they're a great option for your holiday giving.
"We have job training, life skill classes, parenting classes for families," said Martin.
From mentoring residents to serving meals in the kitchen, there's always something to do at the Rescue Mission. If you can't offer financial support, they welcome volunteers all year long. One local pastor spends time there every day praying with residents.
"Our ministries are growing so I would encourage people in our city and the ArkLaTex... come down to the rescue mission to see what we're doing," said Martin.
Lorinda has already reaped the benefits of their volunteer dentist. She recently received dentures for Christmas.
"They went ahead and gave me mine because I do help out so much," said Rhodes.
Click here to search for the charity or non-profit of your choice, and check if they're in good standing with the B.B.B. Before making a donation, it's very important that they meet the B.B.B. Wise Giving Alliance's 20 Standards for Charity Accountability.
