Jindal slashes state budget by $127 million

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal today slashed the state budget by $127 million, making a big dent in the projected $165 million deficit for the year.
The cuts were across the board for the most part, affecting the executive branch, veterans, economic development, corrections, higher education and health and hospitals.
Health and Hospitals and higher education took the biggest hits, with $22 million being cut from the Higher Education budget and $52 million cut from Health and Hospitals.
The Jindal Administration, however, was quick to point out that Minimum Foundation Funds for K-12 students actually increased, as did the state's TOPS program that pays college tuition for Louisiana students who meet certain requirements.
In addition to the actual cuts, streamlining programs, reducing operational expenses and hiring freezes also have been implemented.
