Shreveport residents receive suspicious phone calls

By: Nikki Henderson
Updated: December 7, 2012

Police are trying to find out who is making suspicious phone calls to Shreveport residents.

Authorities have received numerous complaints that someone claiming to be with the Shreveport police department is calling people trying to solicit money.

Residents say the caller tells them they are behind on a loan payment and a warrant has been issued for their arrest.  The caller then requests money so the warrant can be recalled.

The phone calls are coming from 318-673-7300 which is one of the department's non-emergency numbers but investigators say the phone calls are not coming from their office.

Anyone who receives a similar call is asked to call the Shreveport Police Department immediately at 318-673-7300.

Sounds like a spoofed number to me. I have read complaints posted at http://callercenter.com about how some callers hide their real phone number by faking the information that appears on the recipient's caller ID. They can take on any phone number, even that of the police department's.
