Small businesses may not be able to compete with the large crowds and markdowns that big box retailers offer on Black Friday, but they're hoping that people saved some money to support them on Small Business Saturday.
American Express started the shop local movement in 2010. It's a movement across the country to encourage people to shop at small businesses for their holiday shopping. In 2011, over 100 million people came out to shop at independently-owned small businesses.
Shoppers at the Moppet Shoppe said they're happy to support local businesses, especially when looking for fine clothing items.
"They have unique items, that you can come and find that are not in the big stores," said Diane Campbell, of Shreveport, LA. "Personally, I'm a believer in shopping locally and supporting small businesses. If we don't do that , then they'll cease to exist. "
The Moppet Shoppe has been open since 1977. Although the prices for children's clothing there is more expensive, its store owner said families often pass down the clothes for generations.
