Shreveport Fire Department adopts local veteran's home

Updated: November 22, 2012

The Shreveport Fire Department has pledged to serve veterans quarterly as a part of Chief Mulford's new Community Service Initiative.

As part of the pledge, crew members from the Central Fire Station will prepare and serve hot meals for 56 residents of the Volunteers of America North Louisiana, a local residential home for retired and disable veterans, from 4-5:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 25, at 360 Jordan Street in Shreveport.

According to Mulford, the Department collected approximately $1500 from employees --enough to prepare and serve a full course meal. Members from Central Station will deliver the meals; however, the meals were paid for with contributions from the entire department.

"Everyone knows that firefighters can cook, so we're calling the meal a "firehouse" dinner, which will consist of a half smoked chicken, baked beans, potato salad, and dessert" Mulford said. "We want our veterans to know that we appreciate the service they rendered

for our country."

This is the first of four events planned through the end of 2013.
