The Shreveport Chapter of Operation Support Our Troops, Inc. is celebrating Veteran's Day by assembling care packages for troops serving in the Middle East.

Members of the non-profit along with  50-70 volunteers from Girl Scout troops and the Barksdale Airforce Base gathered Saturday morning to pack more than 180 boxes full of hygiene products, food like grits and oatmeal, candy, and Christmas cards. The items were donated throughout October and November by people in the community. Chairman Shirley Olivieri-Mathies said they received less donations this year but she's still happy with the turnout.

"About 100 boxes lower than last year but we're glad to have everything we've got today and we'll be making some troops real happy for Christmas," said Olivieri-Mathies.

The volunteers packed the boxes from 9:30 a.m. until around 2:30 p.m.

The non-profit will also be collecting items for Valentine's Day during the holidays and they will pack boxes with those items on January 12, 2013.
