Petterway served in the US Army from 1943 to 1945, fighting in World War II in France, Italy, and in Africa. The centenarian still recalls vivid memories of wartime and said he's glad the Parish is honoring him for his service.
"It's a wonderful thing to even be here with them," said Petterway. "Could be unable to go at my age and what I been through."
Petterway has also been honored by President Barack Obama and the City of Shreveport for his service and centenarian status.
"It's just a blessing that our family still has them and everyday that we have them still with us, we're grateful for that," said his daughter, Brenda Tolliver.
Petterway lives in his own home with his wife Alzetta Petterway, who is 99-years-old. The couple has been married for 70 years. They have several children, grand children, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren. The couple looks forward to celebrating her 100th birthday and his 102nd birthday in June 2013.
