A Hope Police officer is reportedly dead from the West Nile Virus.

In a statement released Monday, Hope Police say Sgt. David "D.J." Johnson died Saturday afternoon due to complications of the West Nile Virus.

The officer served for more than a decade with the department and had been hospitalized since late August.

"David will be missed, but his legacy will live on in this police department -- through the kind of person that he was," said Hope Police Chief JR Wilson.

Wilson told NBC 6 News on Monday that Johnson was a very dependable officer who was respected by fellow officers.
