The local Texarkana chapter of the American Red Cross is staying busy, ahead of Tropical Storm Issac.

With Isaac heading toward Louisiana, volunteers with the American Red Cross in Texarkana  loaded up supplies into trailers Monday for shelters.

Volunteers gathered basic items, such as cots, blankets and toiletry items -- all things evacuees could need.

Executive Director John Davis says what's really in need right now are volunteers.

"Now is the time that we need the support of the community to help us in being able to staff these shelters," Davis said.

Williams Memorial United Methodist Church in Texarkana will be the first shelter to be opened Tuesday at 8:00 p.m.

"We have some experience and we are grateful to be able to give our services to people in need," said Associate Pastor Sherri Waters.

Anyone interested in volunteering with the American Red Cross in Texarkana can contact them at 903-793-5602 or stop by their office.

Volunteers need to go through training before they're sent out into the field.
