Legislation from all levels of government is aiming to help area veterans.  It's up to local officials to make these servicemen and women aware of any changes in their benefits.  Southern University - Shreveport became a one stop shop Wednesday for all that information.

After the military, figuring out what's next, may be harder than veteran's imagined.

"Some of them may be wavering once they get out - hey what am I going to do because what I'm hearing about... your regular economy?" said Caddo Commissioner Kenneth R. Epperson, Sr. Vet Affairs Appointee.

That's why Epperson was on hand to discuss what's out there for them at a workshop on SUSLA's campus.

"Lot of these laws are making transition that are easier for ones getting out into civilian-type jobs," said Epperson.

"Military is a start, but a lot of times out in the civilian world you have to ... refine your degree, take a few more classes," said John Von Beyhr, veteran.

A former National Guard member, Von Beyhr, is excited to learn what opportunities are open to vets like him.

"Anything.  I'm always looking to utilize benefits that are out there.  That I felt that I earned," said Von Behyr.

Commissioner Epperson says workshops like this are vital to keeping local vets informed because they deserve it.

"They have made a tremendous sacrifice on behalf of this nation," said Epperson.

The recent Louisiana State Legislature also passed laws regarding veterans' education, drivers' licenses and vehicle tags.
