Louisiana to create academic standards for daycares

The state will create a unified system of academic pre-kindergartens.  The changes are outlined in the "Louisiana Believes" plan.  Guidelines will be set for all schools and centers educating infants through five year olds.

               

All schools will have to abide by the standards regardless of the facility's source of funding.  By 2015 the state plans to measure student performance upon entering kindergarten.   According to the Louisiana Department of Education too few children enter kindergarten recognizing letters and able to count.

               

In Louisiana 52% of children entering kindergarten are ready for coursework at that level.  The goal by 2015 is for 70% of students to be ready on day one.
