Parents say they are starting to shop at discount stores for school supplies because the cost is just too much.
According to research from the National Retail Foundation for this school year the average person with children in grades K-12 will spend $688.62. This is a jump from last year's number at $603.63.
Total spending for this school year is expected to reach $30.3 billion. Nationally combined spending with college students is $83.3 billion just for 2012.
"I'm only shopping for one right now and I try to get my bargains. I'm getting my pants here because they're only $8.99," Bossier parent Rosa Craft said.
Many parents are shopping at discount stores like Dollar Mania in Bossier to find not only a good deal on supplies and uniforms, but up to date styles at a low cost.
Parents say when their children can shop at discount stores and trust the quality, they end up being able to come home with more than if they shopped at a department store.
