Quacking The Case

Elizabeth Slimane is an animal lover but...ducks? Well, she's not an expert.

When she and her co-workers noticed a duck camped out for days in an awkward spot next to the Wichita, Kansas store where they work, she knew something was wrong.

"He's not skittish at all. You can get close to him. He doesn't move, doesn't do anything. So that's why I'm worried," she said.

Elizabeth called Parks and Wildlife, The Sedgwick County Zoo, and Animal Control but no one would help.

"It's a federally protected bird. So there's nothing they can do. There's no one in the city of Wichita who has a license for it," said Elizabeth.

Elizabeth said someone even told her to just wait and if the bird dies, put it in a plastic bag and dump it in the trash.

"It shocked a lot of us," she said.

So the duck sat in another day of triple digit heat when finally, an answer arrived.
The Hutchinson Zoo said to bring it there.

"I can get close to him and he doesn't budge," said Elizabeth.

Just as Elizabeth moved the bird she found her answer.

Ducky turned from a he to a she.
"Operation Save Ducky" turned into "Mission Protect a Family."

The zoo said to bring the whole gang to get them away from the public and into a safe environment for hatching.

After one more round of duck, duck goose Ducky and crew were on their way to their new home.
"I think she'll be okay. It's only an hour drive home," said Elizabeth.

The mystery of the sitting duck is now a "quacked" case.
So where's the duck now?

The zoo turned out not to be the best home so a friend of Elizabeth's, with a pond, offered to give it safe, private home where it will be able to peacefully raise its new family.
