Tech Athletes Have Success at Olympic Trials

EUGENE, Ore. (June 29, 2012) - Louisiana Tech jumper Chelsea Hayes and former Louisiana Tech sprinter Michael Coleman both advanced in their respective events as action continued at the U.S. Olympic Trials at Historic Heyward Field in Eugene Friday.

Hayes jumped 21-10 (6.65m) in the opening round of the long jump, finishing seventh overall as the top 12 jumpers advance to the finals round on Sunday (July 1). The top three jumpers in the finals round will make Team USA and will compete at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

On the track, former Louisiana Tech sprinter Michael Coleman ran 20.59 and finished second in his heat to automatically advance to the semifinal round. In the opening round, the top three runners in each heat plus the next six times advance to the semifinal round.

Coleman will run in the second heat of the semifinal round on Saturday (June 30) at 8 p.m. CT. The 200m semifinals will be televised live on NBC. From the semifinal round, the top two runners in each heat and the next two best times will advance to the final round (each semifinal heat has six sprinters in it). From the final round, the top three sprinters will be selected for Team USA.

Former Louisiana Tech discus thrower Jason Morgan will represent his native Jamaica at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
