From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Shreveport Fire Station #13, 5915 West 70th CARKEYS will be distributing booster seats and checking seats for correct installation. Booster seats will be given on a first come, first serve basis to children between the ages of four and 12 and under 57 inches tall.
The event is sponsored by the Children's Hospital at LSU Health Shreveport, the LSU Health Shreveport Foundation and Kohl's Department Stores through its Kohl's Cares program have teamed up to create the CARKEYS (Carseats and Restraints Keep Every Youngster Safe) Project.
Every year, hundreds of children suffer injuries as a result of motor vehicle accidents. Experts say many of those injuries could be prevented with the use of a properly installed child passenger safety seat; yet, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 80 percent of car seats are not installed correctly.
More about CARKEYS
Kohl's commitment to the LSU Health Shreveport Children's Hospital is made possible through the Kohl's Cares cause merchandise program. Through this initiative, Kohl's sells $5 books and plush toys where 100 percent of net profit benefits children's health and education programs nationwide, including hospital partnerships like this one. The CARKEYS program increases the number of NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) certified technicians in the Ark-La-Tex through education and training. Increasing the number of certified technicians allows the CARKEYS program to reach more community members than before about proper car seat installation and use to prevent unnecessary injury and fatalities in motor vehicle accidents.
Throughout the year, Kohl's Stores sell special Kohl's Cares merchandise where 100 percent of the net profits are donated to support health and educational opportunities for children.
The CARKEYS Program will be an ongoing effort between the Children's Hospital of LSUHSC-S, the LSUHS Foundation and Kohl's to educate parents about the need for car seats and their proper installation.
