Calvary Baptist Academy chooses against voucher plan

It's a decision all private schools have to make by this Friday, will they accept state-funded vouchers for students coming from failing public schools?

"I sacrifice every month to be able to send my kids here, that's what I want to do so I feel like they should have other options for those kids," explained Frances Young.

Young and more than 200 parents packed Calvary Baptist church to hear if their school will be using public dollars for private school tuition.

"The problem should be addressed with the Caddo School system and all school systems," she adds. "Why not take that money for the vouchers to correct the problem?"

"There's a lot of benefits to the problem if we were to implement it correctly it could work," said Rebekah Lewis.

She says the plan may work in New Orleans, but northwest Louisiana is different.

"It's a completely different culture and environment in New Orleans, I would hope it would work here," said Lewis. "i don't think there's any gaurantee."

No cameras were allowed inside as pastor and president Rick Edmonds announced the school would not be participating in the voucher program. Edmonds says although it's mission is to connect people to christ, more information is needed before they can be on board.

"I'm extatic, I'm extatic with his decision," said Carol Lamb. "I'm glad he stuck to his guns."

"Happy with the school," added Kimberly Winn. "I believe everything and we'll just go forward."
