Updated: July 21, 2008
The Air Force, Navy, U.S. Coast Guard and several organizations have been searching throughout the night and this morning. The Air Force has confirmed theyve recovered two bodies from the water. They have the identity of one of them, but are waiting to release the name until family is notified. They would not confirm if they are from Barksdale. The search continues for the four remaining crew members and right now, air force officials are just asking that prayers are with the families and search teams. The B-52 was deployed to Andersen Air Force base in Guam. According to officials with Barksdale Air Force Base, the main focus is the search. Col. Robert Wheeler says “The hopes and prayers, thats what were looking at right now its a positive mood from that perspective and theyre doing everything they can.” According to 1st Lt. John Griffin, at Andersen Air Force Base, when the crash happened, the plane was engaged in a training mission and was later scheduled to conduct a flyover during Guams liberation parade. Air force officials say this was a routine mission for this crew and something they do on a constant basis. “The B-52s fly all the time as part of their mission so they do this on a daily basis 7 days a week. Thats a very active part of the country we have many airplanes there and we fly continuously.” Air Force officials say there were no weapons or munitions aboard the aircraft. The search is expected to continue through the night in Guam. A board of officers is investigating the cause of the crash. The last time a B-52 crashed was back in 1994 at Fairchild Air Force Base. Again during a training mission, but that time, it was before an air-show.
