By: Nancy Cook
Updated: March 28, 2012

With 98% precincts reporting, former Sen. Rick Santorum has collected almost as many votes as the other eight candidates received collectively in the Louisiana Republican Primary.

Santorum garnered 49% of the vote, followed by former Gov. Mitt Romney who received 26%  of the vote.  Retired Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich got only 16% of the vote and Texas U.S. Rep. Ron Paul received 6% of the vote.

The remainder of the votes were spread among other candidates, including former Louisiana Gov. Buddy Roemer, who received only 1% of the vote in his home state.

Wayne Cathcart was handily elected mayor of Benton with 75% of the vote, Travis McCracken was elected Greenwood alderman with 55% of the vote; and Sunday sales of alcohol in Cotton Valley passed with 52% of the vote.
