Coach Bradley Dale Peveto sent his team through a regular practice routine, working group and individual drills, for 90 minutes Saturday morning in Turpin Stadium before the hour-long scrimmage and competition period.
"It was a good, fundamental workday, half-practice, half-scrimmage, and I saw a lot of good on both sides. The defense started very fast in the scrimmage, played extremely well, but as the rotation continued, the offense hung in there and made some good plays," he said. "I thought both sides competed well in the early down competition.
"The effort and discipline was extremely good. I asked the referees to call it extremely tight, and there were very few infractions. We're right on schedule after five practices," said Peveto.
Albert stepped in front of a quick out route and raced untouched for the touchdown in the "early down" competition period. The offense twice moved inside the defense's 20 during the regular scrimmage, but there were no live kicking plays in the controlled scrimmage and each time the ball was picked up and moved back upfield.
Starting quarterback Brad Henderson was 5-of-10 for 39 yards, including a 24-yard catch-and-run by tailback Rumeall Morris, also the top runner with 28 yards on seven tries, including back-to-back losses totaling 12 yards on the first series against the No. 1 defense. Backup quarterback Don Canyon threw for 33 yards on 3-of-6 aim including a scrimmage-long 26-yard strike down the middle to tight end Jake Bryan.
Redshirt freshman quarterback Grant Chiasson had the day's longest run, an 18-yarder.
The Demons plan an extended scrimmage lasting about two hours next Saturday morning following midweek workouts Tuesday and Thursday. The Joe Delaney Bowl spring game is Thursday night, April 5 in Turpin Stadium.
